Artist Talk @ 8pm
Four year ago, my daughter started playing with playdough and asked me for help when she became frustrated with something she was struggling to make. I remember thinking to myself that I wasn’t sure how much help I would be, but that day changed my life forever. I began to use clay as a way to heal myself from hardships by releasing the pain I was feeling through the clay sculptures. I use the dark colors to create contrast against the vibrant bright colors that represent my life and strength.
The heart is a recurring symbol in my work because when I was pregnant with my daughter, I developed a serious heart condition. I suffered from cardiac arrests throughout my pregnancy and was told by my doctor that I ran the risk of having a heart attack during labor. Ever since, I have used the heart as a symbol of growth and my new life—a life of resilience, strength and empowerment.
As a proud Mexicana, I use culturally significant imagery in my work as well as the use of bright colors as a means to celebrate my life. After so many years of hardships, I have made a promise to myself to do something I love with my life. This show is that promise to myself of reclaiming my heart to live again. – Antonia Rodriguez

- Antonia Rodriguez
