Weaving Our Power in Color
Opening Reception:
March 10th 5pm-9pm
Artist Talk @ 7:30pm
By using tapestry crochet techniques, I intend to expand people's perception of crochet and create colorful works of art. People will begin to see that, not only can crochet create blankets, baby clothes, beanies etc, but that it can also create works of art. With my artistic pieces, I want to portray aspects of my identity in a beautiful manner. I want to shine a bright light on native cultures of the americas because these cultures are often undervalued and ostracized. I believe that showing native women and men in powerful and positive images will change the undeserved negative perception that currently exists in society, especially Mexican society. By showing other people the beauty that I see, they will start to also see this beauty. They will internalize this beauty and see this beauty in themselves. Not only do I want people to remember that they had a glorious past but also to realize that they can create a glorious future.

About the Artist, Paquiliztli (Diego)
www.paquiliztli.com Inspired by the beauty of Mexican culture, I create happy, bright and colorful art with Tapestry Crochet. I was born in Mexico and moved to the United States at the age of four. I love learning about various topics such as Nahuatl, astronomy, pharmacology, crafts etc. I obtained a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry at UCSD and a Doctorate of Pharmacy at UCSF. My educational experiences were instrumental in forming my identity. My involvement in Ballet Folklorico, Aztec Dancing, MEChA, OASIS and Ethnic Studies courses in college consolidated my identity and have served as fountains of my artistic inspiration. Ever since I started crocheting in 2010, I have been addicted to the repetitive, calming and creative nature of this art . I learned to crochet from my mother and also learned a great deal from books and videos. Through experimentation, I have created my own crochet techniques that allow me to create works of art. I love Tapestry Crochet because I can materialize my creative visions and show others a new perspective on the potential of crochet. My artworks have garnered positive attention, recognition and awesome opportunities. Remezcla.com and Vogue Knitting magazine published articles about me and my work in 2014. In 2016, I received the Functional Fiber Art Award in the Los Angeles Quiltshow and Fiber Fest. Dolores Huerta, who is a prominent civil rights leader, wore one of my pieces as the Grand Marshall during the SF Carnaval Festival 2016. |
