Encuentros en el Bosque
Opening Reception:
April 14th 5pm-9pm
Artist Talk @ 7:30pm
Statement:
My work is a devotional meditation on the ways in which we use aspects of nature to give us strength and bring us acceptance. The resulting drawings are personal totems, which are meant to communicate a sacred and symbiotic connection to the natural world. This installation of work is my own personal offering. One in which I have tried to recreate the sacred, sensual, and intimate space of a forest through its use as a symbol. It is meant to be a space for healing, acceptance, and queer possibilities. -- Jonathan Hemelberg
About the artist:
Jonathan Hemelberg is an SF Bay Area based Artist whose practice consists primarily of drawing. In 2010, he earned his BFA in Painting and Drawing from California College of the Arts. He went on to study Art, Space, and Nature at The University of Edinburgh in Scotland and earned his MFA in 2014. His figures explore concepts of an erotic queer masculinity as defined by primal ornamentation and the symbolism of non-human nature. They serve as personal devotional symbols of strength that contribute to a continuing narrative.
